Environmental effects like temperature, which greatly affect the response of flexible pavements, need to be considered also. The pavement management engineer, who is primarily curious about how the performance of the pavement decays with the number of loading cycles, should remember the speed of degradation to implement an efficient maintenance or rehabilitation strategy. The materials engineer, liable for providing a rutting-and-cracking-resistant mix, must evaluate the consequences of heavy loads, high tire pressures, and high and low temperatures on the responses of the asphalt concrete material and supporting layers of soil.
